Some folks thought I was crazy back in 2006 when I suggested it was time to trade Favre and rebuild. “Blasphemy! It’ll never happen!” someone said around that time during a face to face discussion.
Heh.
Will Brett Farve return for another season in Green Bay? It’s the question half the free world is asking, but no one, including the quarterback, can answer. My opinion, the answer is no. Think about it: if you were the QB, would you come back to a team that’s obviously on the bad side of the NFL power curve? Yes, the Packers could have a great draft, pick up a couple of free agents, and put together a team capable of limping into the playoffs as a low seeded wildcard. Do you really expect anything more than that? More important, does Brett expect anything more than that?
If the Packers were close to serious contention, he would have already announced that he was coming back to make an Elway-esque run at a late-career Super Bowl win. They are not. Favre has nothing to gain by playing another season in a Green Bay Packers uniform other than more numbers added to a sure-thing first ballot hall of fame career.
However… Favre has said over and over that if he’s going to play, he wants to win. So how many teams in the NFL tried out more than one quarterback last year and couldn’t settle on one? What if one of those teams had Favre next season? Could one of them be elevated to the level of a contender by adding a hall of fame quarterback who’s still got a rifle for an arm? Definitely. You might see where I’m going with this by now. I’m suggesting that the Packers get serious about rebuilding and trade Brett Favre. Get some solid draft picks for the next couple of years, and build us a team. Will it be weird to see No. 4 in a different uniform? Certainly. But the world won’t end. Crops won’t fail. The sun won’t stop shining. We won’t stop thinking of Favre as a great quarterback and a decent guy. The Green Bay Packers may even end up being a better football team.
If you really think I’m crazy, go ask the Dallas Cowboys to show you the collection of Super Bowl rings they have. (Remember the Herschel Walker trade?)
